Hollywood Iftar Encourages Creators to Reject "Stereotypical Stories" About Islam

On Wednesday night the Writers Guild Foundation and Muslims on Screen & Television Resource Center (MOST) welcomed influential film and television creators to the 3rd annual Hollywood Iftar.
The London Hotel in West Hollywood played host to the event, a collaboration between the Writers Guild Foundation, Muslims on Screen & Television Resource Center and Unity Productions Foundation.
An iftar is a sacred sunset meal Muslims use to break the daily fast of Ramadan.
Wednesday’s iftar was open to both Muslim and non-Muslim members of Hollywood in the hopes of fostering a better understanding of Islam by those who create film and television. Writers and producers like Greg Daniels (The Office), Joy Gregory (Madame Secretary) and Chip Johannessen (Homeland) mixed and mingled with members of the Islamic community to learn about the nuances of Islamic culture and traditional Muslim practices.
Greg Daniels, showrunner of The Office and Parks and Recreation, says he first experienced the Hollywood Iftar a couple of years ago, after attending a master class with Arab TV writers in Abu Dhabi.
He says he strongly believes in the need for television writers to familiarize themselves with different cultures. “I think it's important for all writers to learn about as much as they can just to have their writing reflect the world accurately,” Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter before alluding to the current political climate. “I also think it's important to show solidarity with minority communities, especially now.”
“[This iftar] is enriching on a personal level too, because you realize how few opportunities there are in our sort of narrowly prescribed lives in this sprawling metropolis to interact with a lot of the cultures in the city, but particularly the Muslim culture,” Gregory told THR. "So, I love the spirit of this event, the encouragement to observe the prayer ritual, to ask questions and strike up new conversations. I just think it's exactly the spirit that we need in this country right now.”
Muslim comedian Preacher Moss hosted the event and cracked jokes about his own first Ramadan. The pre-dinner festivities included a call to prayer — performed by actor Ben Yousef — before attendees officially broke the day’s fast by eating a ceremonial date.
Moss spoke with THR on how the organization has given him a greater awareness of not just Islam but all underrepresented communities he portrays on his shows: “We try to provide resources for Hollywood writers, mainly on television programs, to help them tell stories about Muslims that are beyond the stereotypical stories of terrorists and so forth because Islam is dynamic and diverse and there are so many interesting stories besides that.”
After the fast was broken guests were treated to a buffet and encouraged to ask any questions they had about Islam. Ambassador Cynthia Schneider, now co-director of MOST, delivered the evening’s closing remarks by referencing the power of film and television to fight the country’s growing Islamophobia.

Landmark conference: 'People don't see Black Muslims as trailblazers. We are here to change that'
Conference at NYU challenges erasure and discrimination faced by Black Muslims in the United States

Organisers of the conference, the Black Muslim Initiative (BMI), a collection of undergrad students at New York University (NYU), said the symposium titled "History, Legacies, and Experiences" was an attempt to reclaim the narrative about the role played by Black Muslims in the story of America.
“There is a great lack of awareness of the role of Muslims of African descent in the origin and establishment of Islam in America," Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid, from The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, based in New York, said in a keynote attended by academics, community leaders and students.
"This lack of awareness is amongst all people in America, those who have been here for generations and those who just came here ... [and] one of the reasons there is this lack of knowledge of Muslim history in America is because it is rooted in African-American history.
“There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t hear that America is a nation of immigrants. But it negates the history of the Native Americans and Americans of African descent. We too, aren’t immigrants. We didn’t pack a suitcase and come here. The idea of Islam in America is rooted in the history of African people.”

Historians say many of the first Muslims in the US arrived as slaves and did so "well before America became a nation".
"Scholars estimate that as many as 30 percent of the African slaves brought to the US, from west and central African countries like The Gambia and Cameroon, were Muslim. Among the difficulties they faced, were also those related to their faith," Saeed Ahmed Khan wrote in The Conversation earlier this month.
In August later this year, African-Americans will commemorate 400 years since the first African slaves came to the US.
"This is a big year for us," Imam Talib said.
Racism within Muslim America
It is estimated that one in four Muslims in America are Black.
But Black Muslims are rarely seen as representative of the larger American Muslim community, a role that is almost always consigned to Arab or South Asian immigrants. Black Muslims say that they often face racial bias from white-convert Muslims as well.
“There is a lot of talk about Ummah, but 'your struggle being my struggle' doesn’t really translate," 19-year-old Ngoutane, told MEE.

According to the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding's (ISPU) 2017 American Muslim Poll, 33 percent of Black Muslims said they experience racism from other Muslims.
Racism is a recurring theme within the Muslim community in America, with commentators arguing that Muslims - be it South Asian, Arab or white - tend to reproduce existing racial and class hierarchies in American society.
Jenabu Simaha, 19, co-chair of the BMI, said that some Black Muslims at NYU - herself included - "would adjust their names to make it sound closer to Arabic, in a bid to fit in" with other Muslims on the campus.
“Our struggles don’t matter to some. Being a Black Muslim, I often have to explain that I am Muslim and I have to somehow prove it.
“We just got tired of feeling marginalised and decided to form BMI in 2017,” Simaha said.

Visibly moved by the efforts of BMI, Aisha al-Adawiya, the scholarship officer at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture based in NYC, described the women-led initiative as the leaders “their generation have been waiting for”.
“Society always determines what is relevant and what is not. These are young people making sure their history will be relevant,”Adawiya, who is also a long-time community organiser, told MEE.
“This is an important start. They will need to build bridges, and make sure that they are able to combat forces who will seek to divide us.”
Other speakers at the conference included Jamillah Karim, a former professor of religion at Spelman College in Atlanta; Ousmane Kane, a professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, and Ifrah Magan, an assistant professor and faculty fellow at NYU.
Kane told MEE that the conference was especially important considering the rising tide of Islamophobia in the United States under President Donald Trump.
“The legacy has to be acknowledged because the idea of 'these are others' needs to end."

ایک غیر ملکی رسالہ میں نریندر مودی پر تبصرہ
’سن تو سہی جہاں میں ہے تیرا فسانہ کیا‘

برطانیہ کا ”ایجنٹ آرینج“ (Agent Orange) رقمطراز ہے ”زعفرانی پارٹی کے مسٹر نریندر مودی ہندستانی جمہوریت کیلئے سنگین خطرہ ہیں“۔ اس نے لکھا ہے کہ مسٹر راہل گاندھی کی قیادت میں ایک مخلوط حکومت مودی حکومت سے بہت زیادہ بہتر ہوگی۔ اگر یہ کسی وجہ سے ممکن نہ ہوسکا تو بی جے پی کی سربراہی میں اگر کوئی مخلوط حکومت کی تشکیل ہوتی ہے تو نریندر مودی کے بجائے کسی اور کی سربراہی میں ہو تو ملک کیلئے بدرجہا بہتر ہے کیونکہ نریندر مودی 2002ء میں گجرات فسادات کو روک نہیں سکے اور نہ ہی وہ بدنما داغ اپنی شخصیت سے مٹاسکے جو گجرات فسادات کی وجہ سے ان کی شخصیت پر چسپاں ہے۔
’ایجنٹ آرینج‘ نے 2014ء میں میگزین ’اکنومسٹ‘ (Ecnomist) میں سوال کیا تھا جب نریندر مودی کو غیر معمولی کامیابی لوک سبھا الیکشن میں ملی تھی۔ مودی جی ہندستان کی معاشی حالت کو بہتر بنانے کی کوشش کریں گے یا ملک میں تعصب اور فرقہ واریت کا فروغ کرنے کی سعی و جہد کریں گے؟ ’ایجنٹ آرینج‘ اب لکھتا ہے کہ وہ نہ اچھے ہیں جیسے کہ کہا جاتا ہے اور نہ ہی اتنے برے ہیں جیسا کہ سمجھا جاتا لیکن ہندستان کیلئے بہتر ہے کہ ایسے لیڈر سے چھٹکارہ حاصل کرلیا جائے۔ نریندر مودی اپنے آپ کو مرد آہن سمجھتے ہیں اور یہ سمجھتے ہیں کہ پاکستان کی ناک میں وہی دم کرسکتے ہیں اور اس کے مقابلے پامردی کا مظاہرہ کرسکتے ہیں۔ مودی نے پاکستان کو ڈرانے دھمکانے کیلئے نیو کلیئر ہتھیار کو بھی بے دریغ استعمال کرنے جیسی احمقانہ بات کہی ہے جبکہ ان کو معلوم ہونا چاہئے کہ پاکستان کے پاس بھی نیو کلیئر طاقت ہے۔ اگر ٹکراؤ اور تصادم کی پالیسی برقرار رہتی ہے تو دونوں ملکوں کیلئے تباہی و بربادی ہے۔ نریندر مودی نے جموں اور کشمیر میں جو پالیسی اختیار کی وہ بھی تباہی و بربادی ہی ثابت ہوئی ہے۔’ایجنٹ آرینج‘ آگے لکھتا ہے کہ نریندر مودی نے ہندستان کی معاشی حالت کو بدلنے کیلئے ’نوٹ بندی‘ اور ’جی ایس ٹی‘ کا بھی تجربہ بغیر سوچے سمجھے کر ڈالا جس سے بھی ملک کو بڑی تباہی کا سامنا کرنا پڑا۔ جب پوری دنیا میں پٹرول کی قیمتوں میں گراوٹ ہوئی تھی تو مودی جی نے اس وقت بھی قیمتوں کی تخفیف سے کوئی فائدہ نہیں اٹھایا۔ ملک میں جو خود مختار ادارے تھے اس میں مودی نے مداخلت کرکے ملک کی جمہوری قدروں کو پامال کردیا۔ اپنے سیاسی حریفوں کیلئے سرکاری مشنری کو استعمال کرنے میں کوئی عار محسوس نہیں کیا۔ میڈیا کی آزادی کو بھی خطرہ لاحق ہوگیا۔ فوج کو بھی اپنی پارٹی کی سیاسی ترقی کیلئے استعمال کرنے سے دریغ نہیں کیا۔ بی جے پی کے صدر امیت شاہ نے بنگلہ دیش کے دراندازوں کو بھی آنکھ دکھانے کی کوشش کی۔
نریندر مودی نے جو سب سے زیادہ خطرناک اور تباہ کن کام کیا وہ ہے ہندو مسلم کی تفریق۔ اس کیلئے انھوں نے ملک کی سب سے بڑی ریاست اتر پردیش میں ایک ایسے شخص کو وزیر اعلیٰ بنا دیا جو فرقہ پرستی میں بدنام زمانہ ہے۔’ایجنٹ آرینج‘ نے اس پر بھی تعجب کا اظہار کیا ہے کہ مودی جی نے 2002ء کے گجرات فساد کیلئے بھی نہ شرمندگی کا اظہار کیا اور نہ معافی مانگی۔ ’ایجنٹ آرینج‘ نے یہ بھی لکھا ہے کہ کانگریس میں بدعنوانی اور دوسری خرابیاں ہوسکتی ہیں مگر وہ ملک کی جمہوریت اور دستور کیلئے خطرہ نہیں ہے۔ کانگریس کا انتخابی منشور بہت ہی ترقی پسندانہ ہے۔ کانگریس ترقی پسند نظریات کی ترجمانی کر رہی ہے۔ مسٹر راہل گاندھی ملک کو ہر شعبہئ زندگی میں آگے لے جانے کی خواہش رکھتے ہیں۔ ملک کو جدید بنانے کا بھی ان کا سپنا ہے۔ میڈیا میں انھوں نے مودی کے امیج کو ہوبہو پیش کرکے ووٹروں کو ان کی اصلیت بتانے میں کامیاب ہوئے ہیں، لیکن کانگریس اس قدر آگے نہیں بڑھی ہے کہ وہ دوسری پارٹیوں کی مدد کے بغیر حکومت بنانے میں کامیاب ہوجائے۔ ممکن ہے بی جے پی پھر سے اقتدار میں آجائے۔ جو بھی مخلوط حکومت ہندستان میں الیکشن کے بعد وجود میں آئے اس کی سربراہی نریندر مودی نہ کریں جب ہی ملک کی ترقی اور فلاح ممکن ہے۔ بی جے پی حکومت یا غیر بی جے پی حکومت سے نریندر مودی جیسے فرقہ پرست کو دور رکھنا ہر حال میں بہتر ہوگا۔ نریندر مودی کی حکومت میں جو خرابیاں پیدا ہوئی ہیں جن سے ملک کو جوجھ رہا ہے وہ نریندر مودی کو منظر سے الگ کئے بغیر ہر گز ختم نہیں ہوگا۔
تبصرہ: ایک غیر ملکی رسالہ میں نریندر مودی سے ملک ہندستان کو بچانے کی بات کہی گئی ہے ممکن ہے نریندر مودی کے چاہنے والے اسے ملک دشمنی پر محمول کریں مگر دیکھنا چاہئے کہ بالکل ایسی باتیں اپوزیشن پارٹیاں بھی کم و بیش کہہ رہی ہیں کہ مودی اور شاہ کی جوڑی سے ملک کو نجات ملنی چاہئے۔ بی جے پی کے اندر بھی کچھ لوگ مودی سے پناہ مانگ رہے ہیں مگر وہ ڈر سے آواز بلند نہیں کرسکتے لیکن اگر بی جے پی کو اکثریت نہیں ملی تو بی جے پی کے ایک حصہ کا خیال ہے کہ اس وقت این ڈی اے میں شامل جماعتوں کی مدد سے جو حکومت کی تشکیل ہوگی اس کی سربراہی نیتن گڈکری کرسکتے ہیں۔
ابھی جو سروے مختلف اداروں کے ذریعہ آرہا ہے اس میں بی جے پی یا این ڈی اے کو اکثریت نہیں مل رہی ہے بلکہ کانگریس اور ریاستی پارٹیوں کی اکثریت بتائی جارہی ہے۔ ممکن ہے کہ غیر بی جے پی یا غیر این ڈی اے حکومت کی تشکیل ہو جس سے ملک وقوم کو مودی جی اور ان کی زعفرانی پارٹی سے نجات مل جائے۔ پندرہ سولہ دنوں کے بعد جو کچھ بھی ہونے والا ہوگا وہ سامنے آجائے گا خدا کرے رمضان المبارک کے بابرکت مہینے میں ملک کو اچھی خبر ملے اور ملک کو شر اور فتنہ و فساد سے چھٹکارہ مل جائے۔
مودی کا شرمناک بیان
’پستی کا کوئی حد سے گزرنا دیکھے‘

نریندر مودی نے گجرات کے فساد (2002)میں جو کردار ادا کیا تھا اس کی وجہ سے اس قدر بدنام زمانہ ہوگئے تھے کہ کوئی ملک انھیں ویزا دینے کیلئے تیار نہیں تھا۔ وزیر اعظم بننے کے بعد بیرونی ملکوں نے دروازہ کھول دیا پھر تو ان کی زندگی میں بہار آگئی۔ دنیا بھر کا چکر لگایا مگر افسوس کہ سیکھا کچھ بھی نہیں۔ 2002ء ہی میں سابق وزیر اعظم اٹل بہاری واجپئی نے بھی انھیں گجرات کی وزارت اعلیٰ کی کرسی سے برطرف کرنے کی کوشش کی تھی مگر ظالموں نے مودی کی مدافعت اور وکالت کی جو آج پچھتا رہے ہیں۔ ان میں سے ایک ہیں ان کے استاد محترم ایل کے ایڈوانی جو اپنی بھول کے شکار ہیں۔ نریندر مودی وزیر اعلیٰ گجرات کی کرسی سنبھالنے سے لے کر آج تک جو بیانات دیئے ہیں ان سب کو اگر جسم عطا کر دیا جائے تو دنیا کا بڑا سے بڑا شرپسند اور ظالم مودی سے شرمائے بغیر نہیں رہ سکتا۔ نریندر مودی نے سب کو پیچھے چھوڑ دیا۔ مودی ہی نے مسلمانوں کو کتیا کے بچہ سے تشبیہ دی تھی۔ مودی نریندر مودی نے مسلمانوں کی تطہیر کی بات کی تھی۔ مودی ہی ہیں جو اپنے حریف کو غدارِ وطن اور پاکستانی کہنے سے باز نہیں آتے۔ مودی ہی ہیں جو اپنے پریوار بشمول یوگی، پرگیہ ٹھاکر کے سوا کسی کو بھی ہندو نہیں سمجھتے۔ حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ نریندر مودی کی پرورش و پرداخت، تعلیم و تربیت ایک ایسے پاٹھ شالہ (اسکول) میں ہوئی ہے جہاں ناتھو رام گوڈسے (قاتل) کی پوجا اور پرستش ہوتی ہے اور مہاتما گاندھی (مقتول) جیسی عظیم المرتبت شخصیت کی لعنت و ملامت کی جاتی ہے۔ سابق وزیر اعظم راجیو گاندھی پر نریندر مودی کے بیان پر بہتوں کو تعجب و حیرت ہوئی مگر راقم کو اس لئے حیرت نہیں ہوئی ہے کہ پیالہ میں جو کچھ ہوتا ہے وہی ٹپکتا ہے۔ نریندر مودی نے راجیو گاندھی کو بدعنوان نمبر ایک کی سند دینے کی کوشش کی ہے۔ ان کے بیٹے اور بیٹی نے ان کے منہ پر ایسا تھپڑ مارا ہے کہ وہ شاید ہی زندگی بھر بھول سکیں۔ “Modi ji, the battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul.”
”مودی جی جنگ ختم ہوچکی ہے۔ اب آپ کا بارِ گناہ (کرما) آپ کا انتظار کر رہا ہے۔ آپ اپنے اندر کی غلاظت او ر گندگی کو میرے مرے ہوئے باپ پر پھینک رہے ہیں۔ میرا آپ کیلئے ڈھیر سارا پیار اور محبت“۔
پرینکا گاندھی نے جواباً کہا:
“The prime minister, who is seeking votes in the name of martyrs, yesterday disrespected the martyrdom of a noble man. People in Amethi will give a befitting reply.”
”وزیر اعظم جو شہیدوں کے نام پر ووٹ مانگ ہے ہیں وہ ایک شریف اور نیک انسان کی شہادت پر کیچڑ اچھال کر نام پیدا کرنے کی کوشش کر رہے ہیں۔ امیٹھی کے عوام انھیں منہ توڑ جواب دیں گے“۔
حقیقت میں مودی کی خود پرستی نے انھیں کہیں کا نہیں رکھا، اب تو وہ زبان حال کہہ ہے ہیں ؎
لذت کبھی تھی اب تو مصیبت سی ہوگئی …… مجھ کو گناہ کرنے کی عادت سی ہوگئی
مودی جی نے اپنی ہی پارٹی کے سب سے عظیم المرتبت لیڈر اٹل بہاری واجپئی کی یہ بات بھول گئے جو انھوں نے کہی تھی:
”میں سخت بیمار تھا، راجیو گاندھی کو جب معلوم ہوا تو انھوں نے مجھ سے کہاکہ آپ یو این او کے اجلاس میں شرکت کیجئے اور ملک کی نمائندگی کیجئے، ساتھ ہی ساتھ آپ کیلئے آسانی ہوگی کہ آپ وہاں جاکر اپنا علاج بھی کرالیجئے۔ مجھے تو راجیو گاندھی نے ایک نئی زندگی عطا کی“۔
آج اسی راجیو گاندھی کو انہی کی پارٹی کے ایک شخص کو راجیو گاندھی سب سے بدعنوان شخص معلوم ہورہاہے جبکہ اسے معلوم ہے کہ دہلی ہائی کورٹ نے راجیو گاندھی 1999ء میں بھی کلین چٹ دے دی تھی۔ اٹل بہاری واجپئی کی پانچ سال کی حکومت تھی جسے بھاجپا کی حکومت کہنا چاہئے۔ راجیو گاندھی کو برا بھلا کہنے سے پہلے مودی جی کو اپنی پارٹی کو برا بھلا کہنا چاہئے۔
بہت ہی عظیم دانشور، صحافی اور مصنف، مہاتما گاندھی کے نواسے راج موہن گاندھی کا ایک مضمون نریندر مودی کے مغلظات کے جواب میں ’دی انڈین ایکسپریس‘ میں آج (7مئی2019ء) شائع ہوا ہے۔
مسٹر راج موہن گاندھی نے پہلے بتایا کہ وہ ان لوگوں میں سے ہیں جنھیں بوفورس اسکینڈل سے صدمہ پہنچا تھا لیکن جب وہ امیٹھی سے راجیو گاندھی کے مقابلے میں جنتا دل کے ٹکٹ پر کھڑے تھے انھوں نے مہم کے دوران بوفورس گھٹالے کا ذکر تک نہیں کیا۔ ملائم سنگھ یادو اور وی پی سنگھ (جو بعد میں 1989ء میں وزیر اعظم کے عہدہ پر فائز ہوئے) ان کیلئے امیٹھی آئے تھے۔ مجھے شکست ہوئی تھی پھر بھی راجیو گاندھی نے مجھے اتر پردیش سے راجیہ سبھا کیلئے بھیجا۔ وہ لکھتے ہیں کہ ”1991ء میں کسی ایک بھی ایسے ممبر پارلیمنٹ سے نہیں ملا جو راجیو گاندھی کو بدعنوان سمجھتے ہوں، خواہ وہ حکمراں جماعت سے تعلق رکھتے ہوں یا حزب مخالف سے، ہر ایک کو راجیو گاندھی کی شہادت سے گہرا صدمہ ہوا، یہاں تک کہ کسی نے یہ بھی نہیں کہا راجیو گاندھی نے کرپشن کو برداشت کیا یا بڑھاوا دیا۔ آج 28سال بعد اس پر تہمت لگانے والا شخص کیسا ہوسکتا ہے دنیا سمجھ سکتی ہے۔
مسٹر راج موہن گاندھی نے مزید لکھا ہے کہ 23 مئی کو جو بھی نتیجہ نکلے مگر اتر پردیش کے پرتاپ گڑھ کے انتخابی اجلاس میں جو امیٹھی سے قریب ہے نریندر مودی نے جو کچھ راجیو گاندھی جیسے شریف النفس انسان کیلئے کہا ہے تاریخ نے اسے اپنے صفحات میں ریکارڈ کرلیا ہے جسے دنیا کبھی فراموش نہیں کرسکے گی۔
حقیقت تو یہ ہے کہ نریندر مودی کی بوکھلاہٹ اور شرارت اس وقت ایسی جگہ پہنچ چکی ہے کہ ان کی راتوں کی نیند حرام ہوگئی ہے۔ چار مرحلوں کے انتخابی سروے کا انھیں علم ہوچکا ہے پانچویں مرحلے کیلئے جان کی بازی لگا چکے۔ ابھی دو اور مرحلے باقی رہ گئے ہیں۔ ان کو معلوم ہوگیا کہ شاید ان کی دنیا اندھیری ہوجائے۔ ان کا 50 سال حکومت کرنے کا خواب چکنا چور ہوسکتا ہے۔ راہل گاندھی نے صحیح کہا ہے کہ اب جنگ ختم ہوچکی بہت جلد انھیں ان کے کرموں کی سزا ملنے والی ہے۔

Ya Ramadan!
In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Kind!
A blessed month is casting its shadow upon us.......
A night of this month is better than a thousand months
Bear with patience for the sake of Ar-Rahmaa'n
It's a continuous training to strengthen our Imaan.
Glory be to Allah who sent Ramadan as a mercy to mankind
Its a purification of our soul, our heart, and our mind With the most sincere devotion and love we fast
To be cleansed and free from sins of the past...
Glorified is He, who chose to this holy month,
To test our sabr (Patience) , and fill our hearts with warmth
Of his Divine Light, His blessings shall glow, The Seer of the unseen, all He does know...
Ya Allah! For thee, let my breath be more pleasant than musk...
Ya Allah! For thee, let me be thankful when day turns to dusk...
My thoughts and heart are purified, my eyes truly see'
This blessed month, the month of spiritual rhapsody!
Ya Allah! For thee, my life I shall live!
Ya Allah! For thee, my soul I shall give!
In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Kind,
Praise be to Allah, who sent, Ramadan as a gift to mankind!
The Prophet (Pbuh) said: "He who fasts Ramadan , due to faith and hoping for reward (from Allah)
then his past sins will be forgiven." [Bukhari, Muslim]
